As usual, I've read nothing of those titles, and as usual the nominations seem incredibly weird to me, but I guess congrats to the winners all the same.

Peter Dinklage wins the Emmy!

Congrats to Peter Dinklage who won the Emmy for Supporting Actor in Drama for his role as Tyrion Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones! He more than deserved to win, and I am also happy that a fantasy show gets recognition through the guy.

Hugo award winners 2011

Here is the list of Hugo winners for this year. Nothing fascinating to me, and yet another Connie Willis win seems somehow underwhelming, especially considering the criticism this one generated. Still, I guess 2011 was a slow year, novel-wise... I am however a little pleased that The Dervish House did not win. I realize it is childish of me, but considering how deeply I disliked the novel and how raging the adoration from everyone else, I feel like some measure of balance has been achieved here.

Brandon Sanderson wins the David Gemmell Legend award

So, Brandon Sanderson won the DGLA 2011 for best novel with his Way of Kings. Congrats to him, even if I have severe reservations where this particular award is concerned. The other winners and coverage of the event could be found here.

Personally, I am really disappointed by the Best Novel nominees, as it seems designed to promote Ian McDonald and his The Dervish House. I won't get tired of repeating how underwhelmed I was by that book (Review), but since that makes five of us, if even that many, I should just learn to live with it. Anyway, I haven't really read any of the other offers, but I have heard a good deal of pros and cons for all of them, so who knows how it will turn out. Still, not terribly exciting this year.

The tie between Mieville and Bacigalupi is a surprise, but not an unpleasant one. It was high time the first got a Hugo, and the second more than deserved it. I am constantly perplexed by the admiration that Moon is receiving. The movie was a predictable bland-fest, and although Sam Rockwell did a great job as its schizo protagonist, the screenplay is nothing short of "whatever". But, to each his own I guess. I would like to say something about the other categories, but unfortunately, I am not familiar with them.

In other news, the next Worldcon will be in Chicago, in 2012, just in time for the end of the world!
